While reading a book by Anthony Robbins titled “awaken the giant within”, I came across the ten emotions of power he listed and honestly I totally loved them all. These emotions are all very powerful and when used like they should be they always produce the desired results. The emotions are as follows;
LOVE
Love is so difficult to consistently define, probably because it is a mash up of so many different feelings, for example, ”I can say I love my dog” and also say “I love my parents”, now I love both, but which will you think I love more?, “if you were thinking my dog then you need some special intervention”.... There are different types of love according to the ancient Greek; eros, agape, philia....uuuhhh I don’t know if there is a fourth one, but anyways I am not going to go into all of that. Instead I am going to just narrow my topic “love” to the term “interpersonal love”. Interpersonal love is love for fellow human beings. Therefore it could be love for fellow employees, acquaintances, friends and even family. You do not need to get to know people “one on one” before you have love for them. When you can freely do this you definitely have power. Interpersonal love makes you more caring, understanding, tolerant, and happy and it also makes you loved in return. When you have love, you have love for your country and everyone around. But let us not forget that to truly love others we must first love our selves. Now that does not mean being self centred and selfish, instead it means loving who you are, your personality and appreciating God for making you just right. Only then will you truly be able to love people. Let’s face reality for a moment though; many times they are always those people that no matter how much you try to love them, they always do something to spoil the mood, “trust me I know of those”. But do not be discouraged because it is mostly at times like that that you truly know if you posses power or not, based on your reactions.
APPRECIATION AND GRATITUDE
We will never know how much our level of appreciation and gratitude makes an impression on people. If God himself relishes appreciation and gratitude, then it must be true that this emotion has great power. Appreciation and gratitude to me is simply identifying something and being thankful for it. I appreciate my friends, teachers, family, God and even if I had enemies which of course I do not, I would still appreciate them. Appreciation means you notice how special something is. Appreciation can be many things, but it basically has to do with noticing and thanking or reverencing. Have you ever done something for someone that made the person dance for joy and tell you just how much he appreciates you?, Can you describe the feeling you get watching the smile on that persons face?,... to me that feeling is out of this world, it’s beautiful, its mind blowing, and I always feel like doing more for the person because I want to keep feeling the way their joy makes me feel. Well that is the same way it is for someone else when you appreciate them, and it makes them want to do more. Apart from that appreciation and gratitude shows respect and humility. Now who does not want a respectful and humble fella?...
CURIOSITY (OR THE BIG QUESTION MARK....?)
Am sure we all know that “curiosity killed the cat?”, but do not be afraid, you are not the cat. Curiosity is basically a strong desire to know and learn something. Curiosity makes us more knowledgeable. Like a popular saying goes, “knowledge is Power”. It is true that knowledge is power but I d usually prefer to say that application of knowledge is power .But all in all, the first step to gaining this power is curiosity, because only till you ask questions and seek for answers will you find knowledge.
EXCITEMENT AND PASSION
Oooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!! Yeahhhhhh!!!!!! Woooooooooohoooooooo!!!!!1......I am so excited to write on this, wow! This topic is so awesome! You see all what I just deed is called excitement and many times excitement and passion go hand in hand. Excitement is to kindle passionate feelings, while passion is a strong compelling emotion, mostly of hate or love. Do you know that your excitement and passion convinces people whether to follow you listen to you and even believe you or not. Great leaders of today are mostly very passionate and exciting. And if it is not obvious already, they have some form of power. So what am I saying? , do what you do out of love and be excited about it. Scream, jump, laugh and even run when you have to, because that is what defines passion.
DETERMINATION
For me, determination goes hand in hand with having a purpose. And then being able to make decisions and stand by them. Looking out for them and making sure that they are met, no matter what it takes. So have a purpose, a goal and then strive to get it. Doing this shows power.
Literally flexibility means being capable of being bent, twisted, and bowed and so much more, without yielding to pressure and breaking. Now let’s paint a picture out of it.” you are a mum, with a family of four you have to cook, love and care for, you own a company with hundred employees, who have to oversee, you fly to different countries from time to time for your business meetings. And yet somehow you have it all under control, now that is really being flexible. Another example is you were supposed to have a business meeting on a given day but somehow the meeting got postponed, do you become suddenly disorganized because of this of do you just adjust your schedule and just go on enjoying life that is flexibility.
CONFIDENCE
Confidence is faith. This faith could either be in you, God, a Person or in anything else at all. Confidence makes you think “it is well”, “I know I can do it” or “I know he can or will do it”. Just like passion your confidence convinces people and in some cases even confuses people. Be confident in yourself and people will be confident in you. Be confident in people and they will still be confident in you. And above all be confident in God.
CHEERFULNESS
Cheerfulness is like an infectious disease, when you are cheerful, you will be surrounded by cheerful people. Nobody wants to hang around somebody that kills the plants and insects around him when he passes just with his gloom alone. So be happy always. It is normal for things in life to appear bad sometimes, but even when it does, to show that you really have power, you say “ I am going to be happy no matter what” and then you act happy instead.
VITALITY
According to the online dictionary, vitality is exuberant physical strength or mental vigour. How does a person get vitality? You ask. Well first of all, it’s all in the mind, so make up your mind to be happy, productive, at peace with yourself, healthy and free. A big part of vitality is health. Health is very important and the key to living healthy is simply eating right and exercising. So in the evenings, instead of sitting in front of the TV eating a truck of pop corn and drinking a barrel of soda, get up, play some music and shake your booty, take a walk in the park and clear your mind, do some push ups or skip rope. Take up a sport you love and have fun while doing it. Eat lots of greens and drink lots of water. Play like a child and be free. And you will see how powerful you will feel both physically and mentally.
CONTRIBUTION
Even though contribution is the last it is very important. In the real world, nobody really comes up to you and asks what your opinion is? Or what do you want to contribute? So to have absolute power, you have to make your voice heard. Say that thing you have inside you, do that thing you want to do. Don’t mind people. I think to myself many times that it would be a shame to look back at your life when you are 90 years old and realize that you lived someone else’s life or that you didn’t contribute something to the society you found yourself in at any given time. I believe that we all can always contribute something. We do not have to be leaders first before our opinions and contributions are heard. So start from where you are and contribute you way to the top.
